Barry Amper has been involved in Jewish education for over thirty years as both a teacher and principal. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Queens College in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree from Hofstra University in Special Education. He also holds a Principal’s certificate from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. He is a member of the ASCD as well as Kappa Delta Pi, the international Honor Society of Education. He has held the position of Principal at Reconstructionist Congregation Beth Emeth, Hewlett; Principal/Teacher at Manetto Hill Jewish Center (22 years) and Principal at Congregation Tifereth Israel, Glen Cove.

Barry works during the day at PS 177Q in Fresh Meadows, Queens. This school is part of District 75 which is responsible for educating students with severe disabilities. Barry has worked with students from ages 5-21, who are diagnosed with mental retardation, autism and emotional disturbance. He has worked at PS 177Q for twenty-five years. There he has helped the school attain the status of a New York State Blue Ribbon School. He has also been the project coordinator of “The Culinary Institute”, a program which helps special needs students become more independent and more aware of the world of work. This project is a validated New York State program. He is currently a facilitator at the school, where he is responsible for working with both the administration and his colleagues on the daily routines of the school, including programming, IEPs, related services for the students, as well as assessment of students. Barry has also been (and is currently) a mentor to new teachers to the New York City Department of Education, as well as an instructor to veteran teachers of how to mentor new teachers. He has just joined the faculty of Pace University in New York City as an adjunct professor where he is teaching a course about assessment and special education.

Barry has been involved in both informal and formal Jewish education of students from age Kindergarten to High School. He was a Division Head as well as supply and transportation coordinator for the Mid Island Y JCC; as well as being responsible for several Shabbatons held at both Camp Kutz and Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. He was also the administrative assistant at the Brandeis School in Lawrence, as well as a math, science and religion teacher at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Bergen County, New Jersey.

In Religious Education, Barry has taught in many Reform congregations, including Temple Beth Torah, Dix Hills; Temple Beth El of Great Neck; Shaaray Shalom in Bellmore and most recently at Temple Sinai in Roslyn. He belongs to the Long Island Temple Educators and has been a member of the Principals’ Council of Conservative Judaism (a past Vice President) as well as a Fellow in the Jewish Educators Assembly. He was also an instructor for the Teachers Development Institute of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism where he taught prospective Religious School teachers.

Barry is married and has two children. For relaxation, Barry enjoys word puzzles, bowling, reading, classical and Broadway music, travel as well as being involved in show productions for his public school and Temple Emanu-El.
